The Poor

Here is what I read in my devotions this morning. It was to good not to share:

“Putting ourselves in proximity to oppressed people begins to open us up to understanding and compassion…God identifies with the poor, not because they are more noble but because they are more vulnerable…In opening ourselves up to the poor, we will also discover Jesus, for we find Jesus among the suffering and the poor. This is his natural habitat, yet it is a place where the people never thought to look for him. Jesus has so cast his lot with the least of the earth that to serve them is to serve him; to ignore, neglect, and abuse them is to ignore, neglect, and abuse him. He stands among them, and he asks us not just how much we love the poor; Jesus stands among the poor and asks all those who would call his name, ‘How much do you love me?'” (Jim Wallis, The Call to Conversion).

Kevin, I really appreciate you being a conscience for FWB about our responsibility to the poor. While we’re doing much better internationally (Hanna Project, local churches, other humanitarian agencies), we need to engage the poor among us in the US. Thanks.
