The second paragraph of our United States Declaration of Independence reads, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain and unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
I have heard Dr. John Perkins, a pastor, author, and civil rights activist, quote those words and then say, “Our nation reneged on that commitment. We did not live out those beautiful ideals.”
That is why they knelt, and will probably still kneel, when the NFL kicks off in a few weeks.
You can disagree with the form and substance of their protest. But what you cannot do (unless you are dishonest) is say they are disrespecting the flag and being anti-American. They have made it clear why they kneel. People have simply chosen not to listen. They kneel because they love the United States and want her to live up to her ideals.
It really is that simple.
